How do you rate an on-line bookshop?
Initially, it was difficult to find an objective way to rate the shops. The first question asked was: "What books should be selected?". As the purpose of this site is to be a practical and representative web-site, those books that people tend to read in the London Underground were used; taking the various titles or authors of books. In total, 50 books were selected; taking the different categories into consideration.
The second question was to establish by what criteria the bookshops should be rated.
During a survey, people were asked what was important to them when buying books. Using this information, we then rated this information. For example: How long does it take, and how easy is it to find the book you are looking for (not using the ISBN number)? How expensive is it going to be? What kind of reviews has the book received?
Website Design
The overall design of the site was considered -- as a good web site has an influence on the user's decision making.
Bookshop Features
This shows features that are offered by the bookshops, such as: number of titles, secure transactions, status tracking, partnership programs, reward schemes, ease of contract, and methods of book searching. Though these features were considered in our reviews, they are not included in the overall ratings.
Surveys and tests conducted on the various bookshop sites
The task of rating the shops was given to a team of 12 people who had access to the Internet, but had not used the Internet to order books before. Just like visiting your local library, the team only had the book title to go on and in cases it was not even the full title. They also had either a small description of what the book looked like, the author. s name, or both. This was the real test on how well the bookshop's search facility performed.
Qualified Search
A qualified book search was also conducted, whereby all books by a certain author were searched. The results were counted and then compared with the bookshop's actual database. Most shops had problems here, as they had books in the database by the selected author that were not revealed by the search, or, the search results were so poor that it was impossible to select the correct book. Wow!
Pricing
The book prices were analysed without including the shipping costs (these where analysed separately). The objective was simply to establish which bookstore is on average the cheapest.
