What are your legal rights?

Have you ever thought of your legal rights when buying a book? Well, the Consumer protection laws apply to the Net in the same way as if you would buy a book in a high street shop. The law says that you are entitled to a refund and even compensation if the goods are faulty. BUT as you can imagine it is not quite easy to enforce this law in reality if you are buying over the Net from a shop that is based in another country. In our case it is simple: all our shops are UK shops. Another advice we can give, is that you should buy with your credit card. You have then the same rights against the Credit Card company as you do against the supplier if your purchase is above £100.

What about VAT?

Books are free of VAT (and duty if you buy them abroad). On all other items like for example audio books you have to pay 17.5%. For items containing both a book and an item such as a CD-ROM, the rate is 8%. Generally VAT is included already in the prices displayed on the web sites of the shops. This only applies for UK customers. Book shops are required by law to collect VAT if customers lives within the European Union, other customers: no VAT in the UK but they may be subject to local taxes and customs charges.
